Description

A Latvian witch on a nightly walk.
A common thing in Latvian mythology is that nobody is truly evil (maybe except the sumpurnis - he's a true pain in the ass). The witch in our mythology is just a woman who has special knowledge/powers and uses then for her own benefit - mostly taking the milk away from neighbor's cows and so on. The bucket is a characteristic tool for a witch - that's where the stolen milk goes. Apart from that she can make different potions, bend nature to her liking, make herself invisible, fly on a log or a broom if you are more conservative. These powers have a cost in the afterlife - and they are well aware of that.
Some sources claim that "ragana" (witch) often refers not to a human - but a spirit of nature, this is from older sources.
In opposite to the witches in the Slavic mythology - the Latvian witch is usually young and beautiful - though they age of course. They walk around with loose hair (an average Latvian girl would consider that indecent) and often perform their rituals naked. If at night the forests wouldn't be filled with all kinds of light-fearing crap, there would be probably crowds of ancient Latvian perverts sitting in the bushes and watching them.

P.S - I intend to animate this. The full animation will consist of 8 different scenes, this is the first one

This is a magnificent artwork. I really like all the details, colors and the witch's expression. By the way, the story about ragana is very, very, interesting. Thanks for sharing it.
