Or pūķis. DA would not allow to use Latvian letters in the title. :)
I had an old drawing a long time ago. All I remember about it - it kinda sucks, so I needed a new one :D
As it always it with subjects that are about 8 to 9 centuries old - it is very hard to find something that could be called "truth". With all the different cultures washed over the territory of Latvia it is hard to dig through to the original beliefs of locals.
First of all - dragons for Latvians are no higher beasts, they do are not very intelligent and are servants - they collect and guard treasure for their master - treasure can be money, corn, anything of value really.
Dragons belong to a specific class in the Latvian mythology, that i call "why my neighbor is doing so much better than i do'; whenever somebody is cooler than you - you can blame a dragon. :D Also a dragon  would feel no compunction about taking the treasure from your neighbor and taking it to you. so yeah, dragons can be blamed for rivalry between families since the 10th century.
A dragon is supposedly very pretty, but you cannot show it to anyone - then it will flee. A dragon is usually described as a flying snake, sometimes as a bird. I wanted to keep the reptile look, but since collecting treasure associates with paws, I have him 8 - it also keeps the form long - close to the profile of a snake. The membrane between legs straightens when the dragon is flying and can be used for carrying.
An empty dragon is light reddish, but when it carries a load, it looks blue. I believe ancient Latvians took meteors for dragons, since they tend to look red or blue. there is also a funny superstition about seeing a loaded dragon:
when you see a loaded dragon, you should take off your pants and shout: "dragon! dragon! your pants are open!' - then the dragon drops everything he's carrying and you can collect it.
I can imagine ancient Latvians during meteor showers - stumbling outside, tripping on their loosened pants and yelling :D

I really like the idea of cleptomaniac dragons.
